METHODOLOGICAL INFORMATION
Description

The aim of the Adult Education Survey (AES) is to collect data on the participation of the population aged 18-69 in any educational activity undertaken with the intention of learning. This includes Formal Education,  provided in all educational institutions of primary, secondary and tertiary education, Non-Formal Education, such as seminars, conferences, training courses, tutoring, etc., and Informal Learning, which involves learning without the direct involvement of a teacher. The data collected are analysed in relation to various demographic and other characteristics of the population.

Method

AES is a sample survey. For the sample selection, stratified sampling was used based on district and urban / rural area, resulting in a total of 9 strata.  The distribution of the sample into the nine strata was conducted in proportion to the population aged 18-69 years. The final sample size was 4.500 households.

Data is collected through personal computer-assisted interviews (CAPI) at the household’s premises.

Data Coverage

The AES covers a representative sample of households from all districts of Cyprus, in the urban and rural areas, in the Government controlled area.
The statistical unit for the survey is up to two persons from each private household aged 18-69, residing permanently in Cyprus or have the intention  to reside in the country for at least 12 months.

Frequency

The AES is conducted every five years from 2006 to 2016 and every six years from 2022 and thereafter.
