The above statistics as well as other useful information, are produced from the data collected through the Structure of Earnings Survey (SES).
Structure of Earnings Survey - Survey Identity
The Structure of Earnings Survey (SES) is part of a series of four-yearly surveys, conducted based on the Official Statistics Law of 2021 (Law No. 25(I)/2021) and according to the provisions of Commission Regulation (EC) No 1738/2005 as regards the definition and transmission of information on the structure of earnings.
The aim of this survey is to provide accurate and harmonised data between EU Member States and Candidate Countries for policy-making and research purposes. The SES gives detailed and comparable information on relationships between the level of remuneration, individual characteristics of employees (sex, age, occupation, length of service, highest educational level attained, etc.) and their employer (economic activity, size, etc.).
In Cyprus, the survey is being conducted for the sixth time during 2023, with 2022 being the reference year.
Why is the Structure of Earnings Survey important?
The statistics produced based on the Structure of Earnings Survey (SES), provide important information regarding the structure of earnings of employees in Cyprus, taking into account many relevant factors for employees such as their occupation, the length of service in the enterprise, their education level, the economic activity of their employer, the type of employment (full-time/part-time) etc. Based on the results of the SES, statistics such as the gender pay gap and mean and median earnings per hour/month/year are computed. These statistics are very useful for monitoring the labour market in Cyprus, by decision making entities (e.g. comparison of earnings between public and private sector, general level of earnings, pay differences between full-time and part-time employees, earnings for specific occupational categories of employees, etc.). The information provided by means of this survey, enables the government and other relevant bodies to make evidence based decision making, and push for measures and policies such as the national minimum wage, which ultimately affect all of us.
Consequently, participation in the SES is important and leads to better lives for all of us, through the production of official statistics. So, if you are asked to participate, please do!
And remember, any information you provide us is treated as confidential, so we will never share the personal details of the employees in your enterprise/organisation with anyone, nor any information relevant only to your enterprise/organisation.
Thank you for your cooperation!
