Degree of Urbanisation Classification

The Degree of Urbanisation (DEGURBA) is a classification that indicates the character of an area. Based on the share of the local population living in urban clusters and in urban centres, it classifies the municipalities and communities into three types of area:

(i) Cities (densely populated areas) which are assigned the degree of urbanisation code "1".

(ii) Towns and suburbs (intermediate density areas) which are assigned the degree of urbanisation code "2".

(iii) Rural areas (thinly populated areas) which are assigned the degree of urbanisation code "3".

This classification covers only the Government-controlled area of Cyprus. The municipalities and communities in the occupied areas of Cyprus were assigned a degree of urbanisation code of "9".
