As a result of the revision of the European Regulation on European Statistics, member states are called upon to take the necessary measures to maintain confidence in European Statistics by publishing "Commitments on Confidence in Statistics" (Commitments), in which they declare their support for the production of statistics based on the principles of the European Statistics Code of Practice (Code). Commitments are the link between the Code and the governments of the member states.
The Council of Ministers, by the decision dated 16 October 2018 (Decision No. 85.964) approved the "Commitment on Confidence in Statistics", by which the Cyprus Government assumes responsibility for the country's level of compliance with the Code, in particular in relation to the institutional framework (e.g. professional independence) and those provisions contained in the Code but outside the remit and control of CYSTAT, such as, for example, adequate resources.
The ultimate goal of the Commitment is to further enhance public confidence in official statistics and therefore, includes provisions on actions that the government undertakes to improve or maintain the appropriate conditions for the implementation of the Code. The Commitment is a statement of support for the existing laws and policies implemented by CYSTAT in order to fulfill its obligations under the Code. It also assures the citizens about the independent and objective nature of the production of statistics by CYSTAT.
With the approval of the Commitment, the government ensures CYSTAT's professional independence and recognizes the value of official statistics as a common good.
The public can be informed about the "Commitment on Confidence in Statistics", in the "Summary for Citizens".
