The work of the Statistical Service is related to all social and economic activities in Cyprus. The sources of information are both the public and the private sector. Data relating to the private sector is collected mainly through surveys and for Government Departments and semi-governmental organizations it is mostly collected from administrative files.
Surveys carried out include censuses, sampling surveys and special studies. The data are collected mainly through personal interviews by specially trained permanent and temporary staff. At the design stage of the various investigations, CYSTAT takes into account requests and suggestions from other Government Departments in order to meet their data requirements.
Censuses are conducted for the population, agriculture and business while annual surveys are conducted for various sectors. To monitor short-term developments in the economy, a large number of monthly data and indicators are compiled. These cover, inter alia, foreign trade, employment and unemployment, industrial production, producer prices, building permits, agricultural production, retail, consumer price indices, tourism, vehicle registrations, transport, services etc.
In accordance with the provisions of Article 8 of the Official Statistics Law of 2021 (Law No. 25(I)/2021), CYSTAT prepares a Multi-annual Program of Activities which includes surveys or other work to be carried out during the reporting period. In addition, an Annual Program of Statistical Activities is prepared, which includes the surveys or other work mentioned in the multiannual program and which will be carried out during the year in question.
In the context of the adoption of European best practices, CYSTAT evaluates the degree of implementation of the Programme of Statistical Activities and prepares an annual evaluation report.
