Methodological Note on the Environmental Noise The Department of Environment, Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment, is the competent authority for the assessment and management of environmental noise in Cyprus. In accordance with the provisions of European Directive 2002/49/EC, the Department of Environment proceeded to conducting a study for the mapping of environmental noise, as it is defined in Law No. 224(Ι)/2004. The purpose of this study was the preparation of strategic noise maps for all major roads which have more than 6 million vehicle passages a year. Moreover, in the framework of this study, Action Plans have to be prepared, in order to manage and, if possible, to reduce environmental noise in areas where the exposure levels are high and especially near to sensitive noise receivers (schools, hospitals, institutes etc.). In total 71 (seventy-one) 24hour measurements were carried out, with special automotive noise observation stations, equipped with statistical noise analysers. Further information on the preparation of strategic environmental noise maps is available from the website of the Department of Environment at the following address: www.moa.gov.cy/environment Last Updated: 21/3/2008
