Emissions of Air Pollutants

Methodological Note on the Emissions of Air Pollutants
The competent authority for the estimation of the annual national air emissions is the Department of Labour Inspection of the Ministry of Labour, Welfare and Social Insurance. In order to estimate the emissions to the atmosphere, the methodology and guidelines laid down in the EMEP/EEA Air Pollutant Emission Inventory Guidebook are being followed. Αctivity data and emission factors by sector are also used or emission
measurements from the stacks of the industrial plants.
The activity data used for the calculations are collected from several government services, such as the Department of Agriculture (use of fertilizers, number of animals), the Energy Service (energy balance), the Statistical Service (imports and exports, agricultural statistics), the Road Transport Department (fleet of vehicles), the Civil Aviation Department (landings and take-offs of airplanes), the Department of
Merchant Shipping (ship movements) etc. In addition, data collected directly from industrial plants, in the form of annual reports submitted to the Department of Labour Inspection, are being used.
There exist different types of emissions of air pollutants due to human activities. In Cyprus data are reported for the emissions of various air pollutants, the most important of which are sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), ammonia (NH3), non-methane
volatile organic compounds (NMVOC) and particulate matter (PM). For all gases, emissions from both mobile and stationary sources are reported. Mobile sources include, inter alia, road transport and stationary sources include power stations, industrial and non-industrial fuel combustion and industrial processes.
