Farm Structure Survey, 2013

Methodological note on Farm Structure Survey
Aim The survey aims at deriving data on agricultural and livestock holdings in
Cyprus in relation to land tenure, land use, cultivated areas, the number of animals, employment and other data on holdings as well as the characteristics of the holders. The information is considered useful for the evaluation of the changes in the structure of the sector and for the formulation and implementation of new policies for agriculture and rural areas in general.

Coverage
The unit of enumeration is the agricultural, livestock or agricultural-livestock (mixed) holding, which was defined as a single unit by technical and by economic view, which has single management and which produces agricultural or livestock products. For the purpose of the survey, a unit of this type is considered a holding and is enumerated only if it has:
· utilized agricultural area equal or greater than one (1) decare
at least or which has at least half decare (500m2) in greenhouse or · owns animals, and specifically one (1) or more cows or a total of two (2) and more other large animals of any kind and age (bovine, horses, donkeys), or a total of five (5) and more small animals (sheep, goats, pigs), of any age and gender, or fifty (50) and more poultry, or twenty (20) and more beehives, or five (5) and more ostriches, or ten (10) and more rabbit breeding females.

Data collection The Survey is carried out on a sampling basis every 3 years and as a Census every 10 years. The sample is drawn from the Agricultural and Livestock Holdings Register of the Statistical Service. The data is collected by enumerators through personal interviews with the holders. In compliance with the Statistics Law 15(I) 2000, the Statistical Service is obligated to treat all data collected as confidential and uses it solely
for statistical purposes.

Compilation method Based on the sampling method and the responses to the survey, weighting factors are computed and applied to holding’s row data, in order to produce statistical data that reflects Cyprus as a whole.
