Methodological note on the Price Index of Construction Materials Scope The objective of the Price Index of Construction Materials is to show the evolution of the cost of construction materials incurred by the contractor. Data collection For the preparation of the price index for materials used in construction, the Statistical Service conducts a monthly survey for a sample of products and a sample of suppliers. The reference date for the prices collected is the 15th each month. If the 15th is not a working day, then prices are collected for the closest working day. Prices are valued excluding V.A.T. The survey is carried out by telephone interviews and by fax. Compilation method and dissemination practices The price indices are based in the year 2005, meaning that they show the evolution of the price of a certain material in relation to its average price in 2005. In the base year, the average of the price indices for the twelve months is 100,00. For example, a price index 112,35 for a material in a certain month implies that the price has gone up by 12,35% in relation to its average price of 2005. The aggregated price index of materials is a weighted average of the price indices of the various materials in the sample. The weights used reflect the share of each material to the total expenditure for construction materials incurred by the contractors and are derived from the value of imports and local production for that material. Note that certain materials of low weight that are included in the calculation of the overall index are not shown in the table. For long time-series of the indices for selected key input materials used in construction (e.g. iron, bricks, cement, etc), the table in the file: CONSTRUCTION - PRICE INDEX FOR SELECTED INPUT MATERIALS on the same web page may also be accessed. The index published here covers all types of construction works, whereas the index sent and published by the Statistical Office of the European Communities (Eurostat) in accordance to the provisions of Council Regulation (EC) No 1165/98 concerning short –term statistics and its amending Regulations, is limited to new residential buildings excluding residencies for communities.
