Production Index in Construction (Base year 2000)

Methodological note on the Production Index in Construction

The Production Index measures the quarterly variations in construction activity. It is a volume index that approximates the changes of value
added at factor cost (in constant prices) in Construction. It is based on a sample survey of enterprises active in Construction.
For the calculation of the index, for every reference quarter, the basic data collected is either the work done, turnover or hours worked of the production personnel, depending on the enterprise. This data is then deflated by the appropriate Index of Output Prices (see relevant methodological note in the corresponding Excel file). The indices for the
different types of projects are aggregated to a total index using as weight the value added of each type of project relevant to the total construction sector.
The base year for the index is 2000. This means that the index shows the current evolution of production in relation to its average value in the year 2000. In the base year, the average of the production index for the four quarters is set to 100. For example, an index of 112,35 implies that
production has gone up by 12,35% in relation to the average production of 2000.
The Production Index in Construction follows the provisions of the Council Regulation (EC) No 1165/98 concerning short-term statistics and it is published in its gross form (neither working day nor seasonally adjusted).
