Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (Base Year 2025)

METHODOLOGICAL INFORMATION
Description

The harmonised index of consumer prices (HICP) is a consumer price index that is compiled according to a common methodology. It measures the change over time in the prices of consumer goods and services acquired by households and thus inflation. Because of the common methodology, the HICPs of the individual countries and of the European aggregates can be directly compared.

Method

The HICP is compiled following a series of techniques, such as the use of a single classification system (ECOICOP ver.2), the choice of the formula for the calculation of individual indices, the geographical and population coverage, the coverage of goods and services and the common base year (2025=100), etc. The methodology is similar to that of the national CPI, with the main differences being (a) the inclusion of foreign visitors' expenditure in the weights of the HICP only and (b) the weights of the HICP are reviewed annually while the weights of the national CPI are reviewed less frequently.

Data Coverage

The HICP covers the final monetary consumption expenditure of the household sector by both resident and non-resident households. More specifically, it covers prices of goods and services in Nicosia, Larnaca, Limassol and Paphos. For each city, the monthly price fluctuations per product and service are weighted according to the population. Prices are recorded on predetermined dates within the month, except fruits, vegetables and fuels, for which prices are collected on a weekly basis.

Frequency

Monthly
