Definitions for the Census of Population and Housing 2021
Method Collection of data for the total population, households and institutions, as well as for the housing stock, with reference date the 1st of October 2021. The data was collected mainly by conducting personal or telephone interviews with households (traditional method), with the use of tablets on which a special application, which was developed using the Blaise software, was installed. Given the challenges that had to be encountered during the data collection period due to the insufficient number of enumerators and the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19), it was necessary to modify the initial method (traditional method) and to adopt new methods of data collection. Specifically, the new methods adopted involved the use of administrative data as additional sources of information as well as the use of modern technology. Coverage of about 80% of the population was achieved using the traditional method of data collection, while for the coverage of the remaining population, administrative sources were used (following the approval of the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection). These sources, mainly included the Health Insurance Organisation Beneficiaries data base, the Births Register, the Deaths Register as well as the Population Register. In order to complete the missing information for certain variables, the statistical method of item imputation was employed.
Data Coverage The data refers to the Government controlled areas of Cyprus.
Frequency Population and Housing Censuses constitute a key source of statistical data and are conducted usually every ten years.
