Description Information on the movement of travelers, tourist arrivals, the trips of residents of Cyprus abroad and the total revenue from tourism, as well as data on per person and per day expenditure of tourists.
Method 1) Passenger Survey - Sample survey conducted on a continuous basis, via personal interviews at the points of arrival, at the airports of Larnaka and Pafos.
2) Passenger Survey - Sample survey conducted on a continuous basis, via personal interviews at the points of departure, at the airports of Larnaka and Pafos.
3) Data from administrative sources, such as the Department of Civil Aviation and Cyprus Police.
The Passenger Survey has been conducted as from 1997 at the points of arrival and from 2002 onwards at the points of departure, at all points of entry of the country (the international airports and the ports). Based on the data collected, the volume of inbound tourism is estimated, as well as arrivals of other categories of travelers (residents returning from a trip abroad, long-term immigrants and same-day tourists). Additionally, data referring to revenue from tourism are compiled, based on the results of the Passenger Survey at the points of departure.
The overall sample size for 2019 corresponds to about 2% of the total travelers that arrived in Cyprus.
The grossing up is applied on the basis of the monthly arrivals of travelers by country of flight and the monthly arrivals by port compiled by the Statistical Service, from statistics provided by the Department of Civil Aviation and cruise passenger lists. The Civil Aviation figures are further adjusted by data provided by the Aliens and Immigration Unit (Cyprus Police), on the numbers of transfer passengers on each flight which are deducted from total arrivals.
Data for same-day visitors from ports is based on monthly statements prepared by the Analysis and Statistics Office of the Cyprus Police, while data for same-day visitors from airports is estimated from the Passenger Survey.
Note: For the period June 2020-April 2022, tourist arrivals and returns of residents of Cyprus traveling abroad were obtained from processing the data of the electronic platform "Cyprus Flight Pass". The passengers aiming to travel to and from Cyprus were required to submit in the above-mentioned platform, information in relation to their flight, their country of residence, the purpose of their visit, as well as other demographic characteristics. This information was used by CYSTAT in order to estimate the number of tourist arrivals and residents returning on a monthly basis.
Data Availability Data are published on a monthly and annual basis on CYSTAT's web portal, in the form of press releases, predefined tables and electronic publications. Customisable tables are also available on CYSTAT's online database, CYSTAT-DB (Statistical subtheme: Tourism), as well as infographics.
Principal Variables The statistics refer to the arrivals of the various categories of travelers, such as tourists and residents of Cyprus. Specifically for the category of tourists, additional information is provided concerning the purpose of visit, the country of usual residence, the length of stay, the type of accommodation establishment etc. Data on the total revenue from tourism, as well as data regarding per person and per day expenditure of tourists by country of usual residence, are also available.
