METHODOLOGICAL INFORMATION
Description

Ιnformation regarding medical services offered and an overview of the general level of health and morbidity in Cyprus.

Method

Administrative sources are used for the collection of data, such as the IT system of the Health Insurance Organisation (HIO), the IT systems of the public sector hospitals, the Inspectors of private hospitals, the Pancyprian Medical Association, etc. Data is also collected through the administration of medical statistical forms to the State Health Services Organisation (SHSO), as well as to several departments/services of the Ministry of Health.

The analysis of the discharges as well as the out-patient attendances is based on  the data  reported to the Statistical Service of Cyprus from the IT system of the Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) and includes data from all hospitals and health professionals contracted with the GHS.

Data Coverage

Up to year 2019, due to lack of information for the private sector, the data mainly refer to the public health services. The only data available for the private sector refer to the number of doctors, dentists, nurses, clinics, beds, as well as the number of discharges, bed days, etc. From 2020 onwards, with the implementation of the GHS, further information for the private sector has been made available.

The data refer to the Government controlled area.

Frequency

Annual.

Data Availability

Data are published on an annual basis on CYSTAT's web portal, in the form of predefined tables and electronic publications. Interactive tables are also available on CYSTAT's online database, CYSTAT-DB (statistical subtheme: Health). Additionally, data are sent and published on Eurostat's website.

Comparability Over Time

Most of the data are comparable over time. However, in some cases, due to changes in methodology or the changes in the healthcare system with the implementation of the GHS, a "break in the series" is observed, meaning that data are not comparable from one point backwards. Such cases are clearly denoted in the data published, with the "b: break in the series" flag.

Principal Variables

Data refer to discharges from the hospitals contracted with the GHS, surgical operations performed on these hospitals, out-patient attendances to the medical institutions contracted with the GHS, paramedical services, various health indicators, expenditure on health services, causes of death and health personnel.

Classification Systems

International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems - 10th revision (ICD - 10).

European Shortlist of the Causes of Death (CAUSES OF DEATH, “EUROPEAN SHORTLIST”, Final list – May 2012).

Legal Framework

Part of the data is compiled based on provisions of Regulation (EC) No 1338/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council on Community statistics on public health and health and safety at work.
