Method Processing of administrative data regarding registered unemployed persons. The administrative data files are obtained on a monthly basis from the Department of Labour.
Data Coverage Registered Unemployed are defined as persons over 15 years old who apply to the District and Local Labour Offices of the Department of Labour to seek employment and are registered as unemployed. These persons must be able and available for work and actively looking for work. Self- employed, persons looking for a part-time job or persons seeking for a job at a specific district or with a specific employer are not included.
Data Availability Registered Unemployment is announced with a relevant Press Release. The data are updated on the online database CYSTAT-DB on CYSTAT's web Portal. Seasonally-adjusted data are also available. Data are available in the form of predefined tables, from 2002 until December 2021.
Comparability Over Time Τhe comparison of data from March, 2020 onwards, with the data of previous months is not considered reliable, according to the Department of Labour. This is due to the implementation by the Public Employment Service of the extraordinary measures announced by the Ministry of Labour, Welfare and Social Insurance for automatic renewals of registered unemployed and new registrations of unemployed people without their physical presence in order to avoid the spread of the coronavirus.
As from June 15, 2021, the automatic renewal of registrations was terminated and the online platform of the Public Employment Service was activated to allow the registration of a new job application, its renewal, as well as a job vacancy registration. This may affect the comparison of the monthly unemployment data recorded through this new procedure with the data recorded from the previous procedures.
Principal Variables Data on Registered Unemployed: Number of unemployed persons by economic activity, by occupational category, by sex and age, by district, by educational level, by duration of unemployment and by nationality.
Classification Systems (a) Economic activity: Statistical Codes of Economic Activities 2008 (NACE Rev. 2) - Results disseminated at the 1-digit level.
(b) Occupation: International Standard Classification of Occupations, 2008, (ISCO-08) - Results disseminated at the 1-digit level.
(c) Educational Level: International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED-P, 2011) - Results disseminated in the following groupings: No schooling, Primary, Secondary General Education, Secondary Technical Education, and Higher Education.
Legal Framework There is no relevant legal obligation. Statistics are produced for national purposes and data are sent to Eurostat on the basis of a gentlemen's agreement, on a monthly basis, for use in estimating monthly unemployment.
