METHODOLOGICAL INFORMATION
Description

The Structure of Earnings Survey (SES) gives detailed and comparable information on relationships between the level of remuneration, individual characteristics of employees (sex, age, occupation, length of service, highest educational level attained, etc.) and their employer (economic activity, size, etc.).

Method

A sample survey is conducted in order to collect the requested data on earnings. The data are collected mainly by means of computer assisted personal interviews (CAPI). Administrative sources are also used for the collection of data: Treasury of the Republic, Public Service Committee, Education Service Committee, Cyprus Police and Social Insurance Register. The sampling procedure applied is divided into two stages, employing the enterprise as the primary sampling unit (first stage - probability proportional to size) and the employee as the secondary sampling unit (second stage - simple random sampling within the enterprise). For the SES 2018, the final sample of enterprises consisted of 1.372 enterprises and 29.367 employees.

Data Coverage

The SES covers enterprises in all economic activities, excluding Agriculture, Fishing, Activities of Private Households and Extra-territorial Organisations (Sections B-S of the Nace Rev.2 classification system). All enterprises covered have one or more employees. The population of employees targeted for the SES are those employed, which had an employment contract in the observation unit in the reference month. The statistical unit of the survey is the employee.

Frequency

The SES is conducted every 4 years (reference years 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018 etc.)

Data Availability

The latest available data refer to the year of 2018 (annual data) and the month of October 2018 (monthly data).

The results of the SES are announced with Press Releases. Data for the SES are available on CYSTAT's website for the years 2014 and 2018, in the form of predefined tables. A report (publication) is available for years 2006, 2010 and 2014. Data are also available on EUROSTAT's website for the years 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018.

Comparability Over Time

The data are comparable over time. However, for the surveys before 2010, previous versions of the classification systems used were in force and therefore, comparability of the data by economic activitity or by occupational category is not ensured for data prior 2010.
