LATEST FIGURES: LABOUR FORCE SURVEY – MAIN RESULTS, 2nd QUARTER 2006

According to the results of the Labour Force Survey, which is carried out in accordance with a European Union Regulation, the number of employed persons in the 2nd quarter of 2006, amounted to 356.385 (males 201.227 and females 155.158) and the number of unemployed persons to 15.176 (males 7.048 and females 8.128).

The employment rate for persons aged 15-64 was 69,5% (males 79,6% and females 59,8%) and recorded a small increase from the previous quarter and the corresponding quarter of 2005.

The unemployment rate amounted to 4,1% of the labour force (males 3,4% and females 5,0%) while in the 1st quarter the rate was 5,9% (males 5,3% and females 6,6%) and the corresponding quarter of 2005 the rate was 5,4% (males 4,3% and females 6,7%). The improvement in the unemployment rate is due to the reactivation of the tourism sector. Also the unemployment rate for young persons aged 15-24 recorded a decrease and reached 8,7% of the labour force of the same age group from 12,0% in the previous quarter and 12,7% in the corresponding quarter of 2005.
