New Publication: Industrial Statistics, 2015
The Statistical Service announces the publication of the annual report “Industrial Statistics, 2015”. The report provides detailed data on the broad industrial sector, covering manufacturing, mining and quarrying, electricity supply, water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities.
The industrial sector in 2015 registered a positive growth rate in real terms after six years of recession. On the basis of provisional estimates, this rate (as measured in terms of value added at constant market prices of 2005 by the chain linking method) for the whole of the sector recorded an increase of 2,9% in 2015, compared to decreases of 0,3% in 2014 and 6,9% in 2013. Specifically, according to provisional figures, manufacturing recorded an increase of 3,6%, mining and quarrying 2,7%, electricity supply 2,0% and water supply, sewerage and waste management registered a marginal increase of 0,4%.
The gross output of the industrial sector at current market prices decreased in 2015 by 3,4% and reached €3.521,9 million, compared to €3.646,9 million in 2014. Value added at current market prices is estimated to have reached €1.253,9 million compared to €1.271,2 million in 2014, recording a decrease of 1,4%. The contribution of the sector to the G.D.P. at current market prices reached 7,0%, from 7,1% in 2014.
Employment in the whole of the sector is estimated to have decreased to 31,4 thousand from 31,6 thousand in 2014 and accounted for 9,2% of the gainfully employed population. The number of persons registered as unemployed decreased from 4.713 in 2014 to 3.965 in 2015.
The major developments during 2015 were:
In manufacturing, which constitutes the largest part of the industrial sector, gross output at current market prices reached €2.534,9 million in 2015 compared to €2.518,5 million in 2014, registering an increase of 0,7%. Value added recorded an increase of 1,6% to €859,8 million compared to €846,3 million in 2014. Employment decreased to 27,2 thousand compared to 27,4 thousand in 2014. Expenditure on fixed assets amounted to €52,4 million in 2015 compared to €43,8 million in 2014, recording an increase of 19,7%. Machinery and equipment accounted for 54,5% of the total investment, construction work for 27,5% and transport equipment for the remaining 18,1%.
Mining and Quarrying and Electricity Supply
In these activities, gross output at current market prices reached €717,0 million in 2015, registering a decrease of 15,4% compared to 2014, while value added also decreased by 9,3% to €258,5 million from €284,9 million in 2014. Employment is estimated to have decreased by 1,7% to 2.544 persons, while expenditure on fixed assets increased by 5,0%, reaching €181,3 million compared to €172,7 million in 2014.
Sales of electricity increased by 3,1% and reached 4.036,1 million kWh in 2015 from 3.915,5 million kWh in 2014.
Water Supply, Sewerage, Waste Management and Remediation Activities
In this part of the industrial sector, the gross output at current market prices rose to €270,0 million in 2015, registering a decrease of 4,0%. Value added decreased by 3,2% and reached €135,5 million. Expenditure on fixed assets decreased by 25,1% and reached €21,6 million from €17,3 million in 2014. Employment decreased by 2,3% to 1.612 persons.
Consumption of water in the urban regions is estimated to have increased by 1,8% to 31,5 million tonnes, compared to 31,0 million tonnes in 2014.
Exports of Industrial Products
Exports of domestically produced industrial products reached €625,3 million in 2015 compared to €575,7 million in 2014, recording an increase of 8,6%. The most important categories of industrial products exported by order of importance were pharmaceutical products, food products, non-metallic mineral products, recycled products, machinery and equipment and basic metals.
Large increases compared to 2014 were recorded in the exports of dairy products, preserved fruit and vegetable products and cement, while significant decreases were recorded in the exports of basic metals and recycled products.
