Cyprus holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the second half of 2012.

Cyprus, together with Poland and Denmark, constitute the Trio Presidency for the 18-month period which spans from the 1st July 2011 to the 31st December 2012. Poland held the Presidency in the second half of 2011 and Denmark in the first half of 2012.

The Trio Programme of Poland, Denmark and Cyprus

The three Presidencies will continue the work for the provision of high quality, reliable and relevant official European Statistics and stress the importance of compliance with the principles of the European Statistics Code of Practice. The Presidencies will encourage statistical initiatives that underpin the development, implementation and monitoring of Community policies. Recognising the need to balance the new data needs against the increasing resource constraints, the Presidencies will emphasise the necessity of a continuous focus on simplification and reprioritisation initiatives, as well as of the reduction of the response burden, in order to streamline the European Statistical System. To achieve this, the Presidencies will draw attention to developing structures and production processes of statistics which will improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the production of European Statistics. Promoting a more cost-efficient statistical production system, the Presidencies will encourage initiatives strengthening cost-awareness and cost-transparency of the European Statistical System.

The Cyprus Presidency Programme

The Cyprus Presidency will continue the work for the provision of high quality, reliable and relevant European statistics in compliance with the principles of the European Statistics Code of Practice. The Presidency will emphasise the necessity for a continuous focus on simplification and prioritisation initiatives in the field of statistics, as well as on the reduction of the administrative burden on statistical authorities and respondents, which are key elements in balancing the new data needs against the increasing resource constraints.

Particular attention will be given to the finalisation of the work on the proposal for a Regulation on the European Statistical Programme 2013-2017, which provides the framework for the development, production and dissemination of European statistics, intended to support the implementation and monitoring of EU policies. Also, the Presidency will progress the negotiations on the proposal for amending the Regulation on European Statistics, which aims at improving the governance and efficiency of the European Statistical System.
