On the 10th October 2012, the third meeting of the Council Working Party on Statistics under the Cyprus Presidency took place in Brussels.

According to the agenda of the meeting, the following two items were discussed:

(a) Proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on the European statistical programme 2013-2017.

A document reflecting the preliminary outcome of the first informal trilogue meeting was presented for discussion. In addition to the text for which a preliminary agreement had been reached, the document also included the drafting proposals exchanged with the other institutions via a written consultation. In preparation for the next informal trilogue, scheduled to take place on 18 October 2012, the Member States offered their opinion on these suggestions and provided the Cyprus Presidency with a mandate for the negotiations.

(b) Proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council amending Regulation (EC) No 223/2009 on European statistics.

Based on the views expressed and proposals made by the Member States during the discussion in the two previous Working Party meetings, the Cyprus Presidency presented a compromise proposal for the amendments to articles 2.1.a (professional independence), 5.1 (coordinating role of national statistical institutes) and 5a (heads of national statistical institutes). The Presidency proposal earned the support of the grand majority of Member States; in this respect, a number of drafting suggestions were made.

The next meeting of the Council Working Party on Statistics is scheduled for the 30th October 2012.
